Description
Embark on the Cornish lugger Grayhound, to discover the breathtaking archipelago of the Isles of Scilly.
We are now mainly sailing in French waters, therefore the main language onboard is French. Most of the professional crew onboard is able to speak both English and French. Nous naviguons maintenant principalement dans les eaux françaises, la langue principale à bord est donc le français. La plupart des marins professionnels à bord parlent anglais et français.
Out of the 55 islands, just 5 are inhabited and each has its own distinct character. From the hustle and bustle of the main island of St Mary’s to the resident seabird colonies on Samson, the Isles of Scilly offers something for all ages, abilities and aspirations. Whether you want to sample the local produce of each island or simply find peace in walking the numerous nature trails, exploring this archipelago by boat is the easiest and most fun way to get around.
The main focus of this sailing adventure is to reach the islands. The wind and weather will determine your route so the skipper and crew will have a better idea of what to expect from the weather as you board. (Please note, if the weather is not in favour then an alternative sailing plan will be decided to explore the wonders of the coast of Cornwall instead.)
The islands also boasts with it’s sub-tropical climate. Making it ideal for a wide range of flora and fauna. Many migrating birds has the Scillies as a favourite stop-over. The sandy beaches, crystal clear waters and dramatic nature invites us for a proper adventure.
After leaving the harbour on the busy mainland we sail along the beautiful rugged coast of Cornwall and finally head straight into the Atlantic. You will be fully involved in setting sails, reefing, trimming, jibing and steering as we make our way through the waves of the Celtic Sea. The crew will teach and guide you all the way. After 10-12 hrs and about 30 miles we will reach the Isles of Scilly and head for anchorage by one of its 55 islands.
The weather will dictate our cruise from island to island. The unpredictable whims of the winds and tides will tell us where we go. Sailing between them is hands-on and you will be part of the watch teams helping to navigate from island to island. There are great chances of spotting beautiful sea animals like sharks, dolphins, puffins and seals. We will drop anchor by sandy white beaches, rocky sea cliffs and secluded coves.
The crystal clear waters and the, hopefully, mild and sunny weather will invite you for a swim or a row ashore and have a relaxed beach stroll. Or a hike to one of the many historical sites and learn more about the rich and dramatic history and archaeology of the Scillies. As we ease into the more simple and peaceful way of life we might enjoy a beer or two onboard or head for the beach and make a barbecue with fresh locally grown food as the sun sets.
